THE SHADOW

Poem by Refilwe J Mokgatlenyane

It’s black behind my back
It listens to me every time I talk alone
But it’s neither made of flesh nor bone
It is my only companion

It listens to me when I cry
Without even a word it would utter
It listens sometimes to my laughter
That only comes once when I saw a shooting star,
And captured happiness for a while

It stays with me when am lonely
I wonder why it always hides
From me when I look behind
I wonder why it never lights
But stays dark on days and nights
