Her name is Marcia Ramodike, aged 25, an award-winning author and a founder of a book publishing company named Evelyn50. She is one good example among the youth, reflecting that when one has dreams, one should pursue them until they are achieved.
On A Personal Level
Marcia is from Lenyenye, Tzaneen in Limpopo. She was raised by her mother and her life took a turn for the worst when her mother passed away. She was 17, in Matric, and had to step up to take care of her siblings. Having to take on such a huge responsibility as a child was such a stressful task. However, as a gifted person, she was stimulated to use her talent to earn a living. Marcia is currently doing her final year in BA Forensic Science at the University of South Africa (UNISA).
Her Driving Force and Source of Motivation
Marcia developed a keen interest in literature when she was only 10 years old. Her life was molded greatly by the inspiration she got from the books she read at an early age. “I went to a primary school that had extra mural activities. I had chest problems, so I could not participate in physical school activities. However, when a literature competition was introduced, I grabbed it with both hands. The first book I read was, Her mother’s hope by Francine Rivers. I found magic in that book, and I asked myself how she did that. And I knew from that day that when I grow up, I want to be like her. From that day to date, I have done everything in my power to make it in the literature world,” Marcia explains.
Since then, she natured her writing skills until she achieved her dream of being an author. “I was inspired to start my publishing company because I felt like I’d already done everything I wanted as an author. Book launches at different universities, being featured on radio stations, TV, and newspapers to winning an award. So, through establishing my company, I wanted to help people achieve their writing dreams,” she says. She also draws her inspiration from her family and friends. They are her biggest motivation and always motivate her to work extra hard in order to give her siblings a better life.
Meaning Behind Her Work
Marcia invests her time in researching the topics before jumping into writing a book. She says, “Things that I wrote about were things that black people suffered from, such as black tax. I wrote about the things that I knew.” Marcia also ghostwrites. “Ghostwriting is writing for clients that cannot write for themselves. Writing for myself and others is an important thing because I learn a lot about life from other people through the stories, we tell,” says Marcia.
Goals and Accomplishments
There is no formula for success, but Marcia knew exactly what to do to fulfill her dreams. From the beginning, her objectives were simply to impact the growth of literature and help make dreams come true for aspiring authors whose talent and good story ideas remain untapped and unnoticed. Starting a business and making sure that it succeeds is never an easy journey, but it requires hard work, passion, and dedication. Marcia worked extremely hard to make her business a success. “I managed to fulfill my goals by firstly believing in myself and my goals. No matter the challenges I faced on the way. I always told myself that one day I will make it,” she reflected. Today she is so proud of herself as she has managed to turn her passion into a successful business.
Dealing With Challenges
Marcia is a person who believes in her dreams despite any life obstacles coming her way. Although she has a passion and a burning appetite for writing and helping other writers to achieve their dreams, there are some challenges she encountered that come with it. “The challenges I face mostly are financial issues that include clients’ delays in payments for the services. And to work with clients that have stories too depressing is sometimes challenging because we tend to be sensitive,” she explains. Like any other business, she took lots of risks and spent her last money on marketing her business but through all that, faith kept her believing that she was at the right place, doing the right thing for the right reasons. “Working with people is not so easy, it needs so much patience and humility,” she explained.
Advice to Others
The award-winning author’s advice to people that would like to pursue the same career path as she says, “Follow your heart and work on that dream because everything is possible.”
