DEAR YOU
Darkness haunts you through the night,
On cue to the idea that sad songs could be your lullaby.
But fear remains vibrant in your eyes,
Like torture in a blazing furnace.
Sometimes it’s hard to close your eyes
When your spirit is languishing under love’s bruises.
Yet we still find the courage to love,
Hoping that this brokenness, this time,
Will stay clear of the dream we dream
When we’re high on loneliness,
Medicated under desire.
When we’re delirious from the pain,
We could take drugs to numb the pain,
But we’re hooked on the stories we write,
Pleading for an ear in a world that isn’t listening.
We’re all hooked on something,
To numb the consequences of loving
Someone other than ourselves.
We pay the price for daring to love,
For hoping that, for just this night,
Our hearts may repair themselves
To feel what it’s like to feel again.
Yet the sun still rises in the morning,
Betraying our sorrowful hearts on the road to healing.
A day lasts 24 hours,
But the pain takes longer to give birth to courage.
Still, we must muster the tears, learn to smile,
Knowing that it’s still okay to tire from the practice.
What we ought never to get wrong,
Is to honor ourselves, to love our souls a little more.
That practice was never a sin.
