BROKEN PIECES

Poem by Refilwe J. Mokgatlenyane

When other kids used to brag about their happy families
I stayed still in my shell like a tortoise
I always stayed quiet, that they would never hear my voice
I ran to the back of the house to wipe off my tears

When the twilight hours approach
My heart palpitates more because as the sky darkens it escalates my fears
Darkness envelopes our secrets and makes them unknown to the world

When I finally catch sleep, which is the only break from my daily weep
The angel of dreams draws a happy picture before my eyes
A picture where the sky is happy, and our souls are lighter
A picture where we both smile, and no one is a fighter
A picture where we are a big happy family and everyone
But come dawn all my dreams are gone
Reality again before my open eyes is born and once again as always, my heart is torn
